Homegrown 2025

An intro to our UK growers and winemakers

We started out importing natural wines from historic European winemaking regions - but in early 2020 we had the opportunity to look at what was happening closer to home. Four years later, we count ourselves lucky to now be working with a cluster of producers at the forefront of viticulture and winemaking in the UK.

Right now we are witnessing the beginning of an exciting movement, one in its infancy but thrilling in its promise: with committed, passionate people breaking new ground in one of the most under-rated wine regions in the world.

We fiercely believe in championing these growers and their work: here's an introduction to the different projects across the UK that are producing delicious wines with a real sense of place.

HAM STREET WINES - KENT

Ham Street Wines is the project of husband & wife team Lucie & Jules, who planted four hectares of vines in 2019 on the edge of the Romney Marshes.

Certified biodynamic and following regenerative agricultural practices, the pair have a keen understanding that improving soil health and not upsetting the natural balance is the key to healthy fruit, and happy wines. Their first zero-sulphur releases were made in collaboration with Dan & Nic at Offbeat, and the build of their winery on the farm was completed in time to welcome the 2023 harvest.

Their commitment is an inspiring reminder of what is possible for agriculture in the UK.

SOPHIE EVANS - KENT

Sophie Evans studied winemaking in the UK before travelling to work with Michael & Melanie Voelker at 2Naturkinder in Germany, where she made the first two wines under her own name. She has since returned to the UK to farm a single hectare of vines in Kent: working attentively with teas, ferments, and essential oils for disease control alongside biodynamic treatments.

Working with Pinot Gris & Noir, alongside a small planting of crossed-varieties, her highly accomplished first English vintage is a testament to her attention to detail, intuition and sheer love for winemaking. Thrillingly, it was also one of the first in the UK bottled entirely in reused glass.

TITCH HILL - WEST SUSSEX

Titch Hill is the project of Alex Tristram and Sam Bunker, who met while studying winemaking at Plumpton in 2017. The vines are planted on Alex's family farm. In organic conversion but soon to be certified, they planted 3.5 hectares of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier in 2019. Followed by 4 hectares of different PIWIs in recent years- aiming to reduce any input, allowing more time to focus on soil health.

On the high chalk of the South Downs, the coastal influence is immediately apparent and work in the winery is as minimal as possible to allow the fruit to speak for itself, they are strictly no additions. The wines are immediate and dynamic, with a complexity that belies the youth of both the vines and the project.

QUATRO MUSTACHIOS - WEST SUSSEX (NEGOCE)

Meeting whilst studying at Plumpton in 2017; Sam Bunker & David Haynes officially started their 'international wine collective' Quatro Mustachios in 2020.

Working at vineyards across Europe, alongside the 3rd and 4th Mustachios - Teo Vitsas & Matthias Altmann - the four produced the first collaborative wine under the Quatro Mustachios tag in Austria at Matthias' cellar.

Sam & Dave later produced two more wines in Catalunya and Ribeira Sacra in 2021, before returning home to the UK, to focus on their mutual love of hybrids/PIWI's.

The first UK releases for Quatro Mustachios were produced in 2022 with zero additions in Sussex, using fruit from a 50-year-old vineyard in Somerset, and the other varieties coming from a vineyard on clay over sandstone in East Sussex.

Their wines are huge fun, a testament to intuitive, experimental winemaking and the wild potential of PIWIs in the right hands

MATT GREGORY - LEICESTERSHIRE

In 2020, Matt Gregory surprised himself by jumping workboot-first into a new adventure: taking custody of a three-hectare vineyard planted in 2009/10 to Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and hybrid varieties. With no prior farming experience, Matt embraced organic principles, focusing on biodiversity and soil health. The vineyard, located 100m above sea level on limestone-rich soil, is now alive with diverse plant life.

In the cellar, Matt uses gentle infusion macerations. Blends are carefully assembled, he's learnt the varieties that play nicely together, and those that need their own space. Depending on the vintage, some wines will see no additions, and some a small dose of sulphur. Matt never fines or filters, and all movements are by gravity.

Matt is hugely passionate and committed, honest in what he's still learning, quietly producing some of the most confident, elegant wines in this country.

BLACK MOUNTAIN - HEREFORDSHIRE

In the foothills of the Brecon Beacons you'll find Black Mountain Vineyard, planted by Laura & Mark Smith in 2009 - an evolution with no rulebook, replanting with better-matched hybrid varieties after classic English sparkling varieties proved unsuitable. Organic conversion began in 2018, and Mark has been zero sulphur in the winery since.

Breaking ground at the 52nd parallel, in 2021 Mark began experimenting with his own take on Korean Natural Farming, producing alternative treatments to prioritise soil and vine health. Working with no additions in the cellar, the limited quantity of wines released are eagerly anticipated each year.

MAYLAND VINEYARD - SOMERSET

In our travels across the South West in 2022, we were fortunate to be introduced to George Price, a fourth-generation fruit grower in Somerset, who farms 1.2 hectares of vines alongside his wife, Ellen. They are no till, spray no herbicide or insecticide, and have sheep grazing through the vines over winter, before they mulch extensively in spring.

Primarily, one brilliant wine is produced from the fruit at Mayland right now: a field blend produced by the esteemed Dave Morris of Mountain People (Wales). Among our UK winemaking heroes, Dave works simply and precisely in the cellar, with a hands-off approach - allowing the fermentations to do the hard work whilst working gently for a delicate, detailed wine. Only 500 bottles are currently produced each year.
