2023 Orange
2023 Orange
Skinsy Solaris! Matt’s bona-fides playing with long macerations in Piedmont make themselves known most clearly here: layers of pithy grapefruit, chamomile and wildflower honey, a herbal medicinal hum, gathered together with a nimble running-stitch tannin.
Cuvée: Orange
Style: Still
Colour: Skins
Grapes/Blend: Solaris
ABV: 11%
Vintage: 2023
Winemaking: Hand harvested. Solaris is always the first of Matt's grapes to ripen fully, as much as 10 days earlier than any others. These grapes were de-stemmed and macerated with the grape skins for 9 weeks before being pressed. The wine was rested in stainless steel for 8 months on fine lees before bottling. Unfined, unfiltered and with a small sulphur addition prior to bottling.
Sulphur: 10mg/l added
Soil: Jurassic limestone mud, overlain with glacial deposits: limestone, flint, ironstone and quartz
Matt Gregory farms a beautiful 3-hectare vineyard planted in 2009/10 - south facing and 100 metres above sea level: one of the highest points on the Leicestershire Wolds. Comprising 200 million-year-old Jurassic fine grained limestone mud made up from carbonates of coral and shell, overlain with 2-million-year-old glacial deposits featuring limestone, flint, ironstone and quartz.
Whilst farming is organic, due to the vineyards location in the middle of a 500-acre arable farm, Matt will not be pursuing certification.
From his rows of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Bacchus and a mix of PIWIs Matt produces nimble, elegant wines, worked gently to allow their terroir to shine.
