Ham Street - Lucie Swiestowska & Jules Phillips
England, South East, Kent
We've just received a tiny quantity of the first release from Ham Street Wines in Kent, a vibrant Pet Nat of Bacchus, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, from the first vintage on their regenerative vineyard in Kent.
Ham Street Wines is the project of husband & wife team Lucie & Jules, who planted four hectares of vines just on the edge the Romney marsh four years ago. We're very excited that they'll also be joining us on July 10th for Bedrock By The River !
We were first introduced to them by Daniel & Nicola at Offbeat, who had been incredibly impressed with the quality of fruit at Ham Street and with their attention to detail when it came to organic and regenerative agriculture.
They will be certified organic next year, but go above and beyond the minimum requirements, working with biodynamic teas and preparations, and having been no-till since last April. Soil health is an absolute priority here.
Daniel & Nicola have sourced a lot of fruit from Ham Street for their 2021 releases, and in return helped them make their first Pet Nat in the Offbeat winery.
A gentle foot stomp for the Pinot Noir, and an overnight maceration for the rest, all three varieties were pressed the next morning and began spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel. Aged for a few months in a combination of amphora and tank, the wine was bottled in spring with a little reserved juice to help fermentation continue in bottle.
The finished wine is not disgorged, has no added sulphur, and is not likely to hang around long! Given the small quantity available, and wanting to be as fair as possible, this first wine will be limited to 6 bottles per customer.
