Fifth-generation winemakers Daniel and Jonas Brand took over the family winery from their father Jürgen in 2014 – with his support they expanded from 12 to 18ha and transitioned production to fully organic and natural. In this year, Jonas produced his first 900 bottles of natural wine, from an old-vine Sylvaner vineyard; 2/3 was undrinkable. Undaunted, the brothers now have the whole estate under organic cultivation and are producing a large amount of wine with no added sulphur.
Bockenheim has a cooler climate than most of the Pfalz (therefore the grapes ripen slower). The weather in their area is influenced by the Donnersberg mountain (around 650m high) which shields them from incoming weather systems, the wind is then funnelled down two valleys which means it is fairly breezy and this helps keep the vineyards free from mildew.
12 ha of there are situated on the Bockenheim Sonnenberg hill, vineyards range from 150m up to 350m.

Wines
A special bottling – each year, the brothers assemble a small combination of different barrels and tanks of Riesling from across different vintages in the cellar. A limited, one-off blend each year.
A touch of pip fruits, firestone, yeast dough, brioche and nuts. Salty, juicy and mineral in taste.
Inky-dark in appearance but neon-bright fruited. Rhubarb yoghurt never tasted this good.
Steely, electric Riesling from parcels on the Bockenheimer hill. As much energy as the brothers combined.
From the warm, dry 2022 vintage, this edition is fuller, with fleshy fruit, bruised stonefruit crushed over lime. Delicious
100% Pinot Blanc. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and maceration for 12 hours, aged in used oak barrels for 12 months. No added sulphur. Unfiltered.
The German jigsaw puzzle. Cloudy lemonade for grownups built from a dizzying blend of all the brothers white varieties. ‘Satz is always their first taste of a vintage, assembled in spring each year.
100% Riesling. Fermentation with wild yeasts, aged in used oak barrels for 8 months. No added sulphur. Unfiltered.
100% Pinot Blanc. Wild yeasts, fermented in 1000l wooden barrels. No added sulphur. Unfiltered.
One of Jonas' favourite wines. Tricky to make and never long for this world, it's a favourite of ours too. From their plot of Portugieser particularly loved by wild deer.
100% Riesling with a little maceration, expertly walks the tightrope between complexity and crushability.
Flora! Always a fun wine - dark-fruited, giddy blueberry, delirious acid and someone doing doughnuts in the town centre car park. Great fun, who knew all it took for Dornfelder to taste this good was just Daniel & Jonas working their magic.
100% Muller Thurgau. Wild yeasts, started partly on the mash, fermented in 500l old wooden barrels. No added sulfites. Unfiltered.
100% Pinot Noir. Fermentation with wild yeasts, aged in 500l and 225l wooden barrels (5-10 years old). No added sulphur. Unfiltered.
100% Sylvaner. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Aged 16 months in used oak barrels. No added sulphur. Unfiltered.
A bright and bouncy expression of the brother’s red varieties that weren’t attacked by Kirschessigfliege as their Portugieser was.
Great depth from the sunny 22 vintage. Cherry drops, pretty, delicate fruit, lovely twisted acidity, and linear herbal mineral line holding it together. Breakfast, lunch, dinner? Brand Rosé!
Bright and energetic Pinot, a tiny-berry party, crunchy fruit popping with acidity, delicate pencil-line structure and a long, mineral finish. A wonderful expression .
From a parcel of Portugieser favoured by the local deer, after a warm vintage in 2020, the rosé is lifted with a little acidity from direct-pressed Riesling. Bright and lively!

The 2021 editions of Riesling Monastery and Pinot Noir Pur are available now, and tasting brilliant despite a battle of a harvest.
After a tricky 2021, we have new Brand Bros releases from an unusual year in the Pfalz. We spoke with Jonas about rolling with the punches, and the optimism of new growing season.
The German jigsaw puzzle is nearly here. The eagerly anticipated Wilder Satz 2020 will be landing this afternoon, and we're expecting it to be ready to leave us straight away. We caught up with Jonas recently to untangle the recipe for the blend, bottled in April this year…
Steely, electric Riesling from single site on the Bockenheimer hill. As much energy as the brothers combined.
